“They are an intriguing people. From the moment they wake they devote themselves to the perfection of whatever they pursue. I have never seem such discipline. I am surprised to learn that the word Samurai means, ‘to serve’,” This is a quote from the movie The Last Samurai and I found that it speaks very deeply to me. I have always been fascinated with the way of the samurai and this quote to me shows exactly what they stand for. A samurai is often seen as a big strong rich arrogant man who takes orders from no man and is obsessed with war. In actuality this could never be farther from the truth. A samurai is the servant to the emperor and believes in a strong code of honor. A samurai will also take up one soft art for one art of war. For example if a samurai learns the way of the sword then they will also learn poetry to balance out their life and be strong physically and mentally. to me a samurai is the most honorable warrior there is when ever defeated or ordered to by the emperor a samurai will commit Seppuku which is the samurais word for suicide. However this is not where one takes their live because of bullying or self guilt. This is an honor and the custom and a strong part of the samurai culture. To me this quote shows how one can show great honor and that a warrior must have great determination and the will to perfect an art whether it be self defense or a more light and artistic style.
